Syracuse runs away from Cornell, 88-73

The No. 9 Syracuse Orange eventually put away the pesky Cornell Big Red, 88-73.

The Orange took just a six-point lead into halftime but were eventually able to put some distance between themselves and the Ivy League school.

Guard Brandon Triche led the team with 21 points while backcourt mate Andy Rautins added 18.

Wesley Johnson played 38 minutes and scored 15 points to go with 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

Despite all the players they lost in the offseason, the Orange have gotten off to a strong start this year.

Orange Race Past Cal in 2K Sports Classic

The Syracuse Orange aced their first test of the season with flying colors, as they whizzed by No. 12 Cal on Thursday night in the 2K Sports Classic semi-finals, winning 95-73.

The Orange, missing their top three scorers from last season, didn’t appear to miss them on this night. Scoop Jardine dropped in a career-high 22 points, Wes Johnson added 17 points and 11 rebounds, and forward Arinze Onuaku scored 12 of his own.

“We’re getting better, but we have a way to go,” Boeheim said after the game. “Losing our three leading scorers from last year, we still have a long way to go.”

With the win, the Orange move on to the finals of the 2K Sports Classic, taking on No. 4 UNC tomorrow night.

The Orange blitzed the Bears with their trademark zone defense from the opening tip, and put the game away with an early run in the second half that opened up an insurmountable 20 point lead.

“I think we’re underrated,” said Jardine, who returned after missing last year with a stress fracture in his left leg. “But you ain’t seen Wes, you ain’t seen me really, and that’s what you have to go by.”

Syracuse crushed by Pittsburgh, 37-10

The Syracuse Orange was no match for the No. 14 Pittsburgh Panthers in a disappointing 37-10 loss.

The loss wasn’t so much disappointing as the final score, which wasn’t even close.

The Orange are in a rebuilding process, but the team still would like to think it can be competitive in most games.

Syracuse only trailed 13-0 at the half, but the defense started to wear down in the third quarter, giving up two touchdowns.

The Orange offense has just been abysmal at times this year, as quarterback Greg Paulus has shown his rust.

Syracuse falls to Cincinnati, 28-7

The Syracuse Orange were never really in the game in a 28-7 home loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Syracuse did manage to score an early touchdown to keep the game tied at 7 at the end of the first quarter, but it was pretty clear they were never a threat to actually win it.

The Orange surrendered a touchdown in each of the four quarters and did not score themselves after the first period.

The team still has major issues at the quarterback position, where Greg Paulus was once considered its best option.

Syracuse upset by Division II Le Moyne in exhibition

On Tuesday, the Syracuse Orange basketball team was stunned by Division II Le Moyne, falling 82-79 in an exhibition game after Christopher Johnson buried the game-winning 3-pointer with 8.3 seconds left.

On a positive note, though, Iowa State transfer Wesley Johnson scored a game-high 34 points. Johnson is expected to help carry the load offensively this year following the departures of Jonny Flynn, Paul Harris, and Eric Devendorf.

Losing this game probably isn’t the worst thing for Jim Boheim’s crew. The long-time Syracuse head coach now has more fuel to motivate his players and get them focused ahead of its Nov. 9 opener against Albany.

Maronne suspends three more ahead of Pittsburgh game

Today, Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone announced that three more players have been suspended from the team for violating team rules. Tailback Antwon Bailey, defensive end Torrey Ball and offensive guard Andrew Tiller are the latest to be punished, and the announcement comes a day after star wide receiver Mike Williams quit the team after being suspended for a similar transgression.

The Orange visit No. 14 Pittsburgh on Saturday, and this week’s turmoil makes the chances of pulling off an upset even more unlikely. Still, the first-year coach deserves credit for creating an atmosphere of accountability and discipline in an attempt to change the culture of the once-proud football program that has fallen on hard times of late.

WR Williams Quits Team

WR Mike Williams told coach Doug Marrone on Monday that he was quitting from the Orangemen on Monday.

Williams was suspended nine days ago for violating team policy as the Orangemen took on Akron. He did not play last year due to academic problems.

Williams is one of the top receivers in the country, ranking sixth nationally with 106.57 receiving yards per game and fourteenth nationally with seven receptions per game. He has 20 touchdown catches during his time at Syracuse, tied for second all-time in Orange history - with long-time Colts WR Marvin Harrison.

Marrone was not sure whether Williams also left the university, and Syracuse was unable to confirm either way.
